Private Mold vs. Logo Printing: Which OEM Path Fits Your Brand Budget?

Products

The Two Paths to Branded Products

When you source from China, you have two main options for creating branded products: 1) Use existing products and add your logo (logo printing), or 2) Create a custom product shape/design (private mold). Each has very different costs, timelines, and competitive advantages.

Option 1: Logo Printing (Fastest & Cheapest)

Logo printing means taking an existing, already-produced product and adding your brand via screen print, heat transfer, label, or embossing. No product changes — only the branding layer.

What's Included

Logo on product (screen print or heat transfer), custom poly bag or box packaging with your design, hang tag with brand info. The product itself is identical to the generic version anyone can buy.

Cost & MOQ

Logo printing fee: $50-200 per setup. MOQ: 200-500 pieces. No mold development needed. Total added cost vs. generic: 10-20% above unit price. Best for: first-time sellers testing a category, budget-conscious brands, products where shape doesn't differentiate.

💡 Pro tip: For logo printing, negotiate the setup fee waived if you commit to 1,000+ pieces. Many suppliers will absorb the setup cost for repeat orders.

Option 2: Private Mold (Premium & Exclusive)

A private mold is a custom tool (typically a steel or aluminum mold) that produces a product in YOUR exact specification — your shape, your design, your size. No other brand in the world has the same product.

What's Included

Custom product shape/design created by factory's R&D team, your mold owned by you (not the factory), product unique to your brand, ability to protect design with patent (in most countries).

Cost & MOQ

Mold tooling fee: $500-5,000 depending on complexity. MOQ: 2,000-5,000 pieces for first order. Timeline: 25-40 days from design approval to first sample. Best for: established brands, products where shape differentiates, long-term competitive moat.

The Decision Framework: Which Should You Choose?

Answer these 4 questions to decide:

1) Does your product's shape/function matter to customers? If customers can't tell your product apart by look or feel → Logo printing. If shape = brand identity → Private mold.

2) What's your first-order quantity? Under 500 pcs → Logo printing only. 500-2,000 pcs → Negotiate with factory for modified mold. 2,000+ → Private mold worth the investment.

3) How competitive is the category? Low competition (unique product): Private mold gives you a 12-24 month competitive advantage. High competition (easy to replicate): Logo printing sufficient for market entry.

4) Do you have a patent or design registration? If yes → Private mold with IP protection is essential. If no → Logo printing for market testing first, then consider private mold.

The Hybrid Approach: Modified Mold

The best option for most growing brands: find a factory with a CLOSE existing mold and pay to modify it (change a dimension, add a feature, modify the material). Cost: $200-1,000. MOQ: 500-1,000 pcs. Gets you 70% of the differentiation at 20% of the private mold cost.
